Nim: how a round works
Bring your attention to one round of Nim. Remove the last counter on the board to win. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.
Bring this focus to a round
Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart. Notice the feedback after each input.
The objective of a round
Remove the last counter on the board to win. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Keep the controls in easy reach.
The steps to play
- Player 1 chooses a pile.
- Remove at least one counter, and up to all counters, from that pile.
- The next player chooses a pile and an amount.
- Continue until no counters remain.
Getting comfortable with the controls
Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Use the control method described here for this activity. Look at the feedback after the action.
A useful example
With heaps of 1, 2 and 3 counters, choose one heap and remove at least one counter from it. You cannot take from two heaps in the same turn. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Notice the change in the playing area.
Where a round can go wrong
Only one pile may be changed per turn. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
